Prepare for 2023: Verify Patient’s Eligibility For the New Calendar Year
The beginning of the new year means potentially new insurance plans with new benefits. In order to ensure your claims will be paid for the services you render, it’s very important to do eligibility checks at the start of the new year. Even if the patient says he/she has the same insurance plan, it is best to check and make sure that is the case.
These are the 6 things you should do at the beginning of every year:
1) Use payer portals to check if the current insurance plan you have on file is active
2) If the plan is the same, you should call the payer to find out what the deductible is and confirm it reset at the calendar year
3) If the plan is the same, you should call the payer to find out what the visit limit is and confirm it reset at the calendar year
4) Check what the 2023 annual deductible for Medicare Part B is
5) Reach out to patients to remind them that they now have a deductible to meet now that it is a new year so they know that they will be responsible for the amount up to the deductible.
6) If a plan comes back as inactive, reach out to the patient to get updated insurance information and run a new verification of benefits check on the new plan
